Two hundred and fourteen marble run reports came in this year, and we tagged every one: where it broke, when it broke, and whether it got finished. The pattern was not subtle.
Builds that hit their first collapse in the opening half hour had an 84 percent completion rate. Builds that sailed through the first hour untouched finished barely half the time. An early failure, it turns out, is a commitment device.
Our theory: once something has broken and been fixed, the builder stops protecting the idea of a perfect result and starts playing. Play finishes projects. Perfectionism abandons them.
So we redesigned the guide to fail sooner. Step one now ends with a stress test we know most towers will not pass. You are welcome.
